Global Gaming Women brings support, events to Coast

Global Gaming Women will be an even larger part of this year’s Southern Gaming Summit, sponsoring a luncheon program Tuesday at Island View Casino and hosting a panel discussion Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. moderated by Virginia McDowell, president and board chair of Global Gaming Women.

She was one of the original co-chairs of GGW, which began in 2011 as part of the American Gaming Association. The group became independent this year, launched with $1.5 million in multi-year funding from the AGA.

McDowell said there is a demonstrated need for peer support for women at all levels of the industry.

“The problem is they don’t advocate for themselves,” she said. GGW is helping them find their voice. “It’s giving women the confidence to raise their hands.”

GGW hosted a State of the Industry panel in London and events in Asia, South America and Canada, but McDowell said they want to get the model and infrastructure right in the United States before expanding globally.

Five regional meetings are planned, including one in Biloxi, along with the launch or eight “Lean-In Circles” across the country and a new website to help women in leadership roles become more successful.
