When live casino specialists Evolution launched a casino game inspired by family entertainment gameshows, they knew they were rewriting the rules of what casino fun could look like.

But Evolution brushed off the competition from nine other finalists to claim the Digital Product of the Year Award at the Global Gaming Awards at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas last night.

Awarded to the feature or innovation which has done most to change the face of its sector, the gong is recognition that Evolution’s Dream Catcher may well have revolutionized the home casino gaming experience.

Opening up online casinos to a new market

After being launched back in May, Dream Catcher aims to bring the fun of a live casino setting to the comfort of the player’s home.

So far, so standard; online casinos have been doing the very same for years now.

What sets Dream Catcher apart is its unique appeal – it’s aimed at those who don’t enjoy traditional table games such as poker, blackjack or roulette.

While the game itself still relies heavily on the basic principles of roulette (players must guess which numbered spoke a lucky wheel will land on), it boasts the glitz and glamour of a TV gameshow.

A live dealer accompanies the player on their journey and makes them feel like they’re well and truly in the hotseat.

“Creating a 24/7 live game show is something completely new, and we believe fresh concepts like this are a must if we want to expand live casino to a wider audience,” said Todd Haushalter, chief product officer at Evolution.

“Attention spans are growing shorter and the desire to be entertained is greater, so we wanted to do something that would be relevant to a YouTube-watching audience. Because, in many ways, that is our competition for player’s time.”

A runaway success

Dream Catcher made its debut on Codeta.com back in May and despite being available to players for less than six months, it has already achieved widespread popularity across a number of sites, including Genting, Grosvenor and Mecca Bingo.

The live gameshow element to its interplay is undoubtedly the main reason behind its appeal, tapping into a whole new market of players who normally wouldn’t go near similar online games.

“We knew there were many slot, bingo and other players who we hoped to reach with Dream Catcher, and that’s what we have achieved,” explained Haushalter.

“Dream Catcher has proved incredibly popular with players. The player counts are truly record-setting for a new product.”

Another reason for its popularity is likely the serious stakes at play. With 2x and 7x multipliers on the wheel, players can potentially walk away with thousands of times their original stake; the jackpot stands at an impressive €500,000 ($588,000).

That’s a serious lure for prospective players, and the G2E award just underlines how much of a game-changer it could prove to be.
