IT’S OVER — Mississippi Legislature adjourns 2016 session – Mississippi Business Journal

The Mississippi Legislature has concluded its 2016 session.

The House of Representatives adjourned for a final time Thursday after meeting briefly and disposing of a procedural block on one bill. That measure allows people in designated districts in certain places to carry alcoholic beverages outside the location it was served.

In the first session of a four-year term, Republicans gained a supermajority in both chambers. GOP lawmakers achieved long-held goals, agreeing to abolish elected school superintendents and phase out the corporate franchise tax. Republicans also passed a law that would allow religious institutions and some businesses to deny services to same-sex couples and transgender people.

Legislators couldn’t to agree on plans to raise more money for road and bridge maintenance, or to change the state flag.
