Lonely Planet names Natchez as the No. 2 destination in America – Mississippi Business Journal

Lonely Planet says, in America, only Philadelphia is a better place to visit than Natchez.

The company known for its travel guides says in its Tuesday announcement that Natchez, at the beginning of the Natchez Trace parkway “is the state’s cycling and recreational jewel.”

Some 668 antebellum homes pepper the oldest civilized settlement on the Mississippi River (beating New Orleans by two years). Natchez is also the end (or the beginning!) of the scenic 444-mile Natchez Trace Pkwy… Just outside of town, along the Trace, you’ll find Emerald Mound, the grassy ruins of a Native American city that includes the second-largest Pre-Columbian earthworks in the USA.

Lonely Planet says it picks the “top 10 most exciting, intriguing and up-and-coming” destinations for the list.

Rounding out its top 10 list for 2016, in order: Yellowstone National Park; Birmingham, Alabama; Alaska; Somerville, Massachusetts; Northwest Arkansas; San Antonio; Southern New Mexico; and Milwaukee.
